Welcome to Sports By The Balz — Where the Noise Begins

Let me be straight with you.
When I started thinking about what sports coverage should look like in 2025, I kept coming back to the same problem: most of it is either painfully boring or desperately trying to be something it’s not. You’ve got the corporate networks reading off teleprompters like they’re announcing funeral arrangements, and you’ve got the hot-take factories where everyone’s screaming at each other about nothing because rage gets clicks.
Neither of those things are what sports actually feel like when you’re living them.
So here we are. Sports By The Balz. The newest limb on The Hairy Times Network tree, and yeah, I’m aware of how that sounds. That’s the point.
This whole thing started because I believe — deeply, genuinely believe — that local sports, pro sports, college matchups, and everything in between deserve coverage that actually reflects the energy people bring to watching them. The trash talk with your buddies. The irrational hope before playoff runs. The arguments over whether that ref had money on the game. The joy, the frustration, the absurdity of caring this much about people throwing balls at things.
That’s what we’re building here.
Meet the Balz Brothers
Enter Jim and Harry — the Balz Brothers themselves. If you’ve spent any time around siblings who’ve been competing since birth, you know exactly what you’re getting into. These two are grinding overtime because they’re not just building a sports site — they’re trying to out-work, out-write, and out-analyze each other while technically being on the same team.
It’s beautiful chaos.

Jim’s got the statistical mind and the ability to break down game film like he’s preparing for the bar exam. Harry’s got the gut instinct and the fearlessness to say what everyone’s thinking but nobody wants to print. Put them together and you get bold takes, questionable metaphors, heated debates that sometimes spill into the comment sections, and the kind of brotherly banter that makes you wonder if they’re about to throw hands or high-five.
Spoiler: it’s usually both.
They’re a couple of nuts. Absolutely. But they’re *our* nuts, and they showed up ready to build something that matters.
What We’re Actually Doing Here
Let’s talk about the mission, because this isn’t just “another sports blog.” We’ve got enough of those already, thanks.
Sports By The Balz exists to cover the games that matter — to you, to us, to Colorado, to anyone who gives a damn about what happens when the clock starts. That means local teams getting the attention they deserve. High school phenoms. College rivalries that run deeper than blood. Pro matchups with actual stakes. And yes, the major events everyone’s watching, but covered with the kind of perspective that doesn’t insult your intelligence.
We’re doing real reporting. Real facts. Real breakdowns. You’ll get stats that matter, context that helps, and insights that come from people who actually watch the games instead of skimming box scores five minutes before deadline.
But we’re also doing it with *personality*. Because sports without personality is just math, and math without context is just numbers on a screen. We’re here to entertain you while we inform you. To make you laugh while we make you think. To give you something worth reading that doesn’t feel like homework.
This is coverage that respects your time and your passion for the game.
What’s Coming
Right now, we’re in build mode. The Balz Brothers are adding new sections every week. Fresh breakdowns. Home-team coverage that goes deeper than “they played hard.” Position battles. Coaching decisions. The storylines that actually shape seasons.
We’re building out our college coverage because those games are incredible and too often treated like minor leagues instead of the passionate, high-stakes theater they actually are. We’re carving out space for local heroes because someone’s got to tell those stories, and the national networks sure aren’t going to do it. We’re tracking the pros with the kind of insight that comes from people who’ve been watching this sport since before they could spell it.
And yeah, we’re adding content every week because this thing is growing faster than we expected. Turns out people actually want sports coverage that doesn’t bore them to death or insult them with manufactured controversy. Who knew?
Why This Matters

Here’s the thing I want you to understand about Sports By The Balz and about The Hairy Times Network as a whole: we’re not trying to replace the big guys. We’re not ESPN. We’re not The Athletic. We’re not trying to be.
What we *are* trying to be is the place you actually want to read. The site you send to your buddy with a “dude, you gotta see this.” The coverage that makes you feel like you’re talking sports with people who actually get it, instead of being lectured at by people who think they’re smarter than you.
We’re building something that respects the games and respects you.
Sports are supposed to be fun. They’re supposed to matter. They’re supposed to make you feel something, whether that’s joy or rage or the particular brand of masochism that comes with rooting for a cursed franchise. Our job is to capture that — the real energy, the real stakes, the real reasons we care about any of this in the first place.
And we’re going to do it with style.
The Bigger Picture
Sports By The Balz is part of something larger. The Hairy Times Network is about creating media that doesn’t condescend to you, doesn’t manipulate you, and doesn’t waste your time. Whether it’s news, culture, or sports, we’re building spaces where real reporting meets real personality. Where facts meet fun. Where you can trust what you’re reading and actually enjoy reading it.
This sports corner is our latest experiment in what that looks like. Jim and Harry are the mad scientists. I’m just here making sure the lab doesn’t explode.
(It might explode a little. That’s fine. Explosions make good content.)
Welcome Aboard
So welcome. Seriously. We’re glad you’re here.
Bookmark us. Check back often. Join the arguments in the comments. Send us your takes, your questions, your “you guys are completely wrong about this” messages. We’re building this thing in real time, and your voice is part of what makes it work.
The Balz Brothers are bringing the noise. The game coverage is coming fast. The takes are hot. The facts are solid. The metaphors are questionable.
And honestly? That’s exactly what we’re going for.
Let’s have some fun with this.
